Under Shadow of Proposed RFS Rule, Iowa’s List of E15 Stations Continues to Grow

JOHNSTON, IOWA –Waukon Feed Ranch in Waukon, Iowa today announced it will begin offering E15 to 2001 and newer vehicles, making it Iowa’s ninth registered E15 retailer.

“Our customers enjoy saving some of their hard earned money, and E15 allows them to do just that” stated Waukon Feed Ranch Office Manager Dwight Bacon. “Anytime we can offer a product that beats our competitors on price and supports the Iowa economy, we jump on it. Clean-burning, homegrown E15 is the cheapest fuel available to 2001 and newer vehicles.”

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) recently released the results of a new analysis that shows a shift in the fuels carried in pipelines that service Iowa will lead to E15 being the lowest-cost option for many retailers. To view the E15 economic analysis, please click here.

“While Big Oil continues to call for a reduction in Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) levels because of the so-called ‘E10 blend wall’, Iowa’s motorist and retailers continue to blow past the E10 level and choose higher blend levels like E15 and E85,” stated IRFA Managing Director Lucy Norton. “Bottom line: cheaper, more American-made E15 is helping to tear down the imaginary blend wall.”

Waukon Feed Ranch is located in Northeast Iowa at 615 Old Highway 9 in Waukon. In addition to E15, Waukon Feed Ranch features a blender pump and offers consumers E85 and other mid-level ethanol blends, as well as biodiesel. E15, a blend of gasoline and 15 percent ethanol, can be used by all 2001 and newer passenger vehicles, which account for about 85 percent of fuel use in the United States.  In order to offer E15, a retailer must register with the EPA.  IRFA assists retailers in the registration process to ensure they comply with all applicable federal and state E15 regulations.

Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 42 ethanol refineries capable of producing over 3.8 billion gallons annually, with three cellulosic ethanol facilities currently under construction. In addition, Iowa has 12 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce nearly 315 million gallons annually.

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s liquid renewable fuels industry. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
