JOHNSTON, IOWA – At a time of record gas prices, Iowans can save by choosing the highest biofuel blend their engine will allow.

Flex-fuel vehicles (FFV) are approved to use any ethanol blend up to E85. A quick way for Iowans to discover if they drive an FFV is to check their owner’s manual or look for a yellow gas cap.

Those who don’t drive an FFV can still save 10 to 30 or more cents a gallon in some cases with E15/Unleaded 88. E15, often marketed as Unleaded 88, is approved for all 2001 and newer vehicles.

“Biofuels have been saving Iowans money at the pump for many years but now it is more important than ever,” said Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) Executive Director Monte Shaw. “These days every penny counts and biofuels are here to help.”

IRFA regularly tracks and reports wholesale E85 prices. Below are prices from March 14. The most expensive wholesale supplier was still selling E85 for over $1 cheaper than ethanol-free fuel.
