JOHNSTON, IA – During a sparsely attended anti-pipeline protest at the Iowa Capitol today, a number of bills were introduced that would destroy Iowa farmers’ ability to compete in growing, low carbon biofuels markets in the U.S. and around the world. Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Executive Director Monte Shaw made the following statement:

“This muddle of bills is a slap in the face to the supermajority of Iowa landowners who support carbon capture pipelines. At a time when farm income has declined by $90 billion, we should be helping Iowa farmers access new and growing markets, not choking off their ability to participate. These actions represent wrong policy at the wrong time.”

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association represents the state’s liquid renewable fuels industry and works to foster its growth. Iowa is the nation’s leader in renewable fuels production with 42 ethanol refineries capable of producing 4.7 billion gallons annually – including 34 million gallons of annual cellulosic ethanol production capacity – and 10 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce 416 million gallons annually.
