WEST DES MOINES, IA – Lincolnway Energy’s Monarch Fueling Station is in full bloom, seven years after its inception.

The Monarch Fueling Station project was established by the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association in partnership with the Iowa Monarch Consortium. The project helps IRFA members grow patches of monarch butterfly habitat at ethanol and biodiesel production facilities.

“Monarch butterflies play a vital role in pollinating both crops and wildflowers, and Iowa sits at the heart of their summer breeding grounds,” said Monte Shaw, Executive Director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. “Our mission goes beyond advocating for cleaner fuels—we’re also committed to helping our members support broader environmental stewardship.”

Lincolnway Energy is one of many IRFA members to add Monarch Fueling Station to their facility. Seedling for Lincolnway’s station was laid back in 2017 and has bloomed every summer since.

“It’s exciting to move forward on this project at Lincolnway Energy. Protecting pollinators like the monarch butterfly is important to Iowa agriculture and we are proud to be doing our part by creating and maintaining this habitat.”  said Chris Cleveland, Vice President of Operations of Lincolnway Energy.
